Time & Bill is now available for iPhone and Android

Time & Bill is now available on your phone.

The mobile app is live on the App Store and on Google Play:

Download Time & Bill on the App Store

Get Time & Bill on Google Play

This closes an important gap in the relaunch.

Time & Bill mobile is a complete rewrite of the old app with more functionality.

What the mobile app can do

The first mobile release focuses on the daily workflows that matter most when you are away from your desk:

review daily and weekly work time on the dashboard,

add and edit time entries,

move between days,

delete entries when needed,

manage projects and tasks,

start, stop, delete, and book stopwatches,

The app is not meant to replace the full browser interface.
It is meant to cover the practical mobile situations:
entering time shortly after work happened, even when you don’t have your computer around.

Built for the same Time & Bill account

The mobile app uses your existing Time & Bill account.
Install the app from the app store and sign in with the same credentials you use in the browser.

The app currently supports english and german.

You can find the mobile app documentation here:

Time & Bill mobile app documentation

If you have further questions, need assistance or have suggestions how
to improve the app even more, feel free to reach out.

Time & Bill im App Store laden

Time & Bill bei Google Play laden

Für denselben Time & Bill Account

Die mobile App nutzt Ihren bestehenden Time & Bill Account.

Time & Bill Mobile App Dokumentation

Introducing HumbleBee: local-first time tracking without a subscription

Today we are introducing HumbleBee, a free and open source time tracker for people who want to keep their work time local.

HumbleBee is not a replacement for Time & Bill. It is a different tool for a different situation.

Time & Bill remains the hosted product for teams, shared browser workflows, reports, roles, and managed business use. HumbleBee is the local-first option for developers, freelancers, consultants, and solo users who prefer a smaller tool with a local SQLite database, a CLI, and a standalone GUI.

If you already know which product you need, that distinction is simple:

choose Time & Bill when you want a hosted team product,

choose HumbleBee when you want local-first solo time tracking.

For a permanent side-by-side comparison, see Time & Bill vs HumbleBee.

Why HumbleBee exists

Not every time tracking problem needs a subscription, a team account, or a hosted system.

Some people simply want to track work time on their own computer. They want to know where the database is. They want to back it up themselves. They want a tool that works offline, has no required cloud account, and remains understandable.

That is the space HumbleBee is designed for.

It stores data locally in SQLite. The database can be copied, backed up, switched, and inspected. The workflow is intentionally focused: create projects and tasks, start and stop time, enter manual time, run reports, and export what you need.

CLI and GUI

HumbleBee started as a CLI-first tool.

For many developers, that is still the fastest workflow:

humblebee start "Client Project > Development"
humblebee stop
humblebee report

But not everyone wants to remember commands during the workday. That is why HumbleBee also includes a standalone GUI.

The GUI gives you:

a dashboard with weekly and monthly work time,

multiple stopwatch cards,

project and task management,

reports with filters,

print and spreadsheet export,

Time & Bill import,

local database switching.

Import from Time & Bill

HumbleBee can import a Time & Bill export.

That is useful if you want a local archive of your data, if you want to test a local-first workflow, or if your current use case no longer needs a hosted team product.

The import flow previews what will happen before writing data. It reports created projects, tasks, and time entries. If imported time conflicts with existing local time, HumbleBee reports the conflict and skips the conflicting entry instead of overwriting local work.

What HumbleBee is not

HumbleBee is not meant to become Time & Bill in miniature.

It does not try to solve team permissions, shared hosted reports, mobile-first workflows, account administration, or managed SaaS operations. Time & Bill exists for those use cases.

HumbleBee is deliberately smaller:

one local user,

local data ownership,

CLI and desktop GUI,

open source code,

simple reports.

That boundary is important. It keeps HumbleBee useful for solo work and keeps Time & Bill focused on hosted collaboration.

Download HumbleBee

You can download HumbleBee from GitHub:

github.com/grobmeier/humblebee/releases

The project source is also available on GitHub:

github.com/grobmeier/humblebee

If you want to start with documentation, use the HumbleBee guide.

A small but useful addition

Time tracking should match the way you work.

For some people, that means a hosted product with collaboration, reports, and managed infrastructure. That is Time & Bill.

For others, it means a local database, a fast CLI, and a desktop app that stays out of the way. That is HumbleBee.

Both can exist, because both solve real problems.

HumbleBee: lokale Zeiterfassung ohne Abo

Den dauerhaften Vergleich finden Sie hier: Time & Bill vs HumbleBee.

HumbleBee speichert Daten lokal in SQLite.

HumbleBee begann als CLI-first Werkzeug.

humblebee start "Client Project > Development"
humblebee stop
humblebee report

mehrere Stoppuhr-Karten,

Projekt- und Aufgabenverwaltung,

Reports mit Filtern,

Druck und Tabellenexport,

Time & Bill Import,

Wechsel lokaler Datenbanken.

Import aus Time & Bill

HumbleBee soll kein kleines Time & Bill werden.

lokale Datenhoheit,

CLI und Desktop-GUI,

offener Quellcode,

einfache Reports.

New: Financial overview and thresholds per project

Time & Bill now includes a new feature for people who need more than simple time tracking.

From now on, each project can have a financial overview with time and value for:

the current month

the current year

the full project history

On top of that, there are thresholds and warnings when a project moves into a critical range.

Why this matters

Many service providers do not work with hours alone. They also work with budgets, monthly limits, or internal comparison values.

A typical example:

a client does not want to pay more than 5,000 euros per month

a consulting project should stay below 12,000 euros overall

a case is evaluated internally against a reference amount to identify economic risks early

Until now, these values often had to be kept in mind manually or calculated in separate spreadsheets. This feature is meant to avoid exactly that.

What is visible now

If a project hourly rate or task hourly rate is set for a project, Time & Bill now shows directly in the project:

Time (Month)

Value (Month)

Time (Year)

Value (Year)

Time (Total)

Value (Total)

Together with these totals, warnings can appear when needed for:

monthly budget

yearly budget

total budget

reference threshold

This information is not only visible in the project itself, but also in the related warning and overview areas.

How the calculation works

The logic is intentionally simple and transparent.

The calculation uses:

only billable time entries

the task hourly rate, if one is set

otherwise the project hourly rate

A generic user default hourly rate is deliberately not used here. The feature should only work with explicitly set project rates.

That means:

time values are the summed booked hours

values are calculated from time x active project or task rate

Thresholds instead of guesswork

Thresholds can now be defined in the project settings:

monthly budget

yearly budget

total budget

reference amount

reference factor

warning threshold (%)

This supports two typical scenarios.

Example 1: Consulting

You take on a smaller consulting assignment.

You expect:

an architecture review

a few calls

some code review

one or two days of follow-up work

You think:

Normally, this kind of work should land at around 2,000 euros.

Then you could enter, for example:

reference amount: 2,000 euros

reference factor: 1.5

This creates a comparison threshold of:

3,000 euros

With a warning threshold of 80%, the warning starts at:

2,400 euros

And the threshold is considered exceeded from:

3,000 euros

Example 2: Law firm / case

In law firms or legally sensitive cases, it is often not only important how many hours were recorded. What matters is how the total value compares to an internal or statutory reference value.

Here, the reference amount can be derived from a known fee basis, for example from an amount that is internally taken from the German RVG table or from the expected statutory fee structure.

Then you might enter:

reference amount: 2,000 euros

reference factor: 5

This gives you:

comparison threshold: 10,000 euros

With an 80% warning threshold:

warning from 8,000 euros

exceeded from 10,000 euros

Important: Time & Bill does not calculate statutory legal fees automatically.
The system only takes the reference amount and factor you set and turns them into a clearly visible risk or comparison value.

Who can see this data?

The financial overview is intentionally restricted.

Currently, only these roles can see it:

Owners

Controllers

Regular project members do not see these financial totals and warnings.

Who is this useful for?

The feature was triggered by a concrete law-firm use case, but it is intentionally broader.

It is useful, for example, for:

lawyers and criminal defense attorneys

tax advisors

business consultants

agencies

architects

expert witnesses

smaller project teams with clear budget limits

Whenever not only time but also the economic frame of a project matters, the financial overview helps.

Conclusion

With the new financial overview, pure time tracking becomes an early control instrument.

You no longer only see what was booked, but also where a project currently stands economically:

in the month

in the year

across the full project lifetime

And that is exactly the difference between pure recording and real steering.

Was jetzt sichtbar ist

Monatsbudget

Jahresbudget

Gesamtbudget

Referenzbetrag

Referenzfaktor

Warnschwelle (%)

Damit lassen sich zwei typische Szenarien abbilden.

Beispiel 1: Consulting

Sie übernehmen einen kleineren Beratungsauftrag.

Sie rechnen mit:

Architektur-Review

einigen Calls

etwas Code-Review

ein bis zwei Tagen Nacharbeit

Sie denken:

Normalerweise sollte so etwas bei rund 2.000 Euro landen.

Dann können Sie zum Beispiel eintragen:

Referenzbetrag: 2.000 Euro

Referenzfaktor: 1,5

Damit ergibt sich eine Vergleichsschwelle von:

3.000 Euro

Referenzbetrag: 2.000 Euro

Referenzfaktor: 5

Damit ergibt sich:

Vergleichsschwelle: 10.000 Euro

Bei 80 % Warnschwelle:

Warnung ab 8.000 Euro

überschritten ab 10.000 Euro

Wichtig: Time & Bill berechnet hier keine gesetzlichen Gebühren automatisch.

Time & Bill Is Back

Time & Bill is running again. You can use it in the browser or through the iPhone and Android apps, on your own or with a team of up to 20 people. It is a paid service now, and that is an important part of this story. You can see the current prices or create an account.

Why I shut it down

In 2023, I switched Time & Bill off.

People used the product, but most accounts were free. The small amount of income disappeared into infrastructure costs, while maintenance kept taking more of my time. I had built something useful, but I had not built a sustainable business around it.

That was my responsibility. Closing the service was painful, particularly because other people had trusted it with their daily work. But keeping an underfunded product alive indefinitely would not have been responsible either.

Why bring it back?

I still believe there is room for small, independent software. Not every useful product needs to become a platform, raise funding, or pursue endless growth. Sometimes it should simply solve a problem well and have a business model that pays for its continued care.

Time & Bill is that kind of product. It records project time, expenses, rates, budgets, and reports without trying to run the rest of your company. The application data is hosted in Germany, the relevant service providers are public, and I explain the practical privacy tradeoffs rather than hiding behind broad promises.

What is different this time

The application has been modernized and cleaned up, security work has continued, and the mobile apps are now available. Just as importantly, I have narrowed the product’s purpose and changed how it is funded.

There are no permanently free accounts. Time & Bill costs 5 € for one person, 15 € for a team of up to five, or 40 € for a team of up to 20, plus VAT. That money pays for the infrastructure and the work required to keep the product dependable.

I am not promising that the software will never have a problem. I am promising that there is a real person responsible for it. I build and operate Time & Bill through Grobmeier Solutions GmbH, and when you contact us, you are not dealing with an anonymous growth company or an automated persona.

Built to stay useful

The goal is no longer to make Time & Bill as large as possible. The goal is to keep it useful, understandable, and maintainable for the people who choose it.

If you used Time & Bill before, thank you for giving it another look. If you are discovering it now, you can start with the tour, compare the small-team plans, or read how I approach trust and privacy.

Time & Bill ist zurück

Time & Bill läuft wieder.

Warum ich Time & Bill eingestellt habe

2023 habe ich Time & Bill abgeschaltet.

Warum also zurückkommen?

Time Management at Work: How to Boost Productivity and Reduce Stress

Do you feel like you’re drowning in an endless stream of tasks and to-dos? We’ve all been there. Trying to manage your workload can be overwhelming, especially when deadlines loom and stress mounts. But don’t worry — effective time management at work can help reduce anxiety and boost productivity for a successful career. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a freelancer, or an employee, understanding how to make the most of your time can help you boost productivity, reduce stress and achieve success. Let’s explore some strategies for mastering time management at work. Read on for important insights into organizing yourself at work so that everything runs as smoothly as possible!

Set Goals and Prioritize Tasks

One of the best ways to manage your time is by setting realistic goals and prioritizing your tasks. For those working remotely, managing your time efficiently should also be a priority. Before beginning any project or task, it’s helpful to create a checklist of what needs to be done and set up a timeline for yourself. When creating this timeline, be sure to consider how much time each step will require so you can allot enough time for everything that needs to be completed. By setting clear goals to achieve each day, you can boost your productivity and reduce stress.

Take breaks throughout the day

It might sound counterintuitive but taking breaks throughout the day is actually essential for staying productive and managing your time wisely. It can be tempting to try and power through without rest but this isn’t sustainable in the long run! Taking even just 5-10 minutes out of every hour during work hours can help relieve stress, improve concentration levels, and give you more energy when returning to work after taking a break.

Engage with your co-workers

If you’re looking to improve productivity while simultaneously reducing stress, participating in employee engagement initiatives is key. Many workplaces have weekly check-ins to discuss their current workload and time management or provide a platform where employees can easily access workspace resources. As each employee learns how to better manage their time, motivation and overall team productivity is increased!

Make Use of Technology

Technology has revolutionized modern life in countless ways—including our ability to manage our time more effectively! There are plenty of apps available which allow users to easily organize their notes, prioritize tasks, set reminders, and more! These tools are incredibly useful when it comes to staying organized and on top of projects with tight deadlines.

Regardless of the industry and work setup, time management is an essential skill for anyone looking for success in their job or career path. By setting goals and prioritizing tasks, taking breaks throughout the day, engaging with co-workers, and making use of technology tools - you will find that efficient management of your time leads not only helps boost productivity but also reduces stress levels significantly! With these key strategies in mind, you’ll be able to balance your professional life so that you can achieve a healthy work-life balance.

The 10 Best Tips for Productivity

Procrastination is your favorite enemy? Instead of being productive, you prefer looking at your smartphone twice, fall in a cleaning mania or make coffee appointments? The good news is: you are not alone. We all know this situation, we all promise to do better next time. However, this is no more than an illusion in most of the times.

You will find reasons again and again to postpone that particular task. “It isn’t that urgent… “. This goes on hour after hour, day by day, and one day you’ll have to admit: your own productivity has resigned, procrastination has taken over. In your private life, you will be able to compensate for it, in your job you could be facing real problems. However, there are a few simple tips on how to increase your productivity. Try the following 10 tips at work or at home and your productivity will clearly increase.

1. A Good Breakfast Does Make A Difference

Mom already knew it: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Mom was right! Above all, a good and healthy breakfast in the morning increases your productivity. About 20 percent of the calories that you partake of daily, are used by your brain. It thereby makes sense that nutrition has a great impact on our productivity.

Breakfast is particularly important. There is a very simple explanation: At night, our blood glucose level is significantly slowing down. This is the reason why you feel tired and listless. Productivity is not to be expected in this situation.

Many people simply have a coffee instead of having breakfast. Although the caffeine will leverage you temporarily, the long-term effect is even deadlier for your productivity. Your blood glucose level will very likely drop later. The consequences will be a lack of concentration and listlessness. To avoid this and to become more productive, take your time in the morning for at least 15 minutes to have breakfast. You mainly need energy in terms of carbohydrates. However, it depends on the right type of carbs. Try eating food with polysaccharides (whole grain, oat flakes, potatoes). They will provide you with energy for the longer term and your blood glucose level won’t fall rapidly in the course of the day.

2. Compile A To-do List Every Day

If you want to increase your productivity, you will have to make a precise plan every day. Take ten minutes on the previous evening and prepare a to-do list. This method can easily be used in your personal and professional life at the same time. Ask yourself the following questions:

What will my day be like?

Which appointments are on the list both in private life and in the job?

What will be special?

What do I want to achieve during these 24 hours?

When you have answered these questions, you can start to plan your day. Consider how you can manage all appointments and goals without losing track of them.

This to-do list will help you to increase your productivity. This is less because of what you have written down but because you have written it down. Confusing? Not at all. Of course, you should adhere to your to-do list on the next day to be as productive as possible. However, writing the list has given you something far more valuable: a sense of time. You have confronted yourself with how you could effectively use the single hours of a day. This is a big and important step. While you have usually wasted your time on procrastination, you will now do the opposite.

The to-do list also appeals to your inner sense of responsibility – you will see your goals for the day in cold print. Your desire to keep to this plan will thereby automatically be greater. This will of course have a positive impact on your productivity.

3. Switch Off Facebook, Twitter, Etc.

Social media channels are fatal for your productivity. Five minutes of scrolling can easily add up to many hours per day. Facebook, Twitter, etc. are best friends with procrastination, as there is always something new to discover. In most cases, increasing productivity thereby means: social media needs to be shut down! But how does this work? The answer seems to be quite simple, however, virtual visits belong to our everyday life these days. To simply stop doing it isn’t always possible. There are a few ways though, to use social media channels to a lesser extent step by step.

To become more productive in your job, establish for yourself the following
Rule: No Facebook, Twitter Or Instagram During Working Hours

Of course, this applies only to those who do not have to use social media channels for their work. If you stick to this rule, your productivity will soon reach a new level. Looking up your own feed again and again for five minutes on your smartphone or tablet? That is taboo as of now!

While the own sense of duty might be helpful regarding a social media ban in the job, the temptation at home is even growing. On the one hand, this is because you might have successfully followed the first rule and you would now really like to know what is new online. On the other hand, because the word leisure time gives your inner organism a kind of permission, so to say: do what you want! Of course, you shouldn’t completely give up social media in your leisure time. This would be utopic and unnecessary. To be productive in your private life as well though, the posts and tweets of your fellow people should not occupy your complete spare time. Try doing one hour without social media in your leisure time. This simple step will show you what you are able to achieve when Facebook etc. are not hindering.

4. The Yesterbox

At work, your e-mail inbox can become a hurdle. You have just started working on a new task at your desk and there it is: the notification of an incoming e-mail. Most of the times, you will interrupt your work and take a look at your inbox. This process is repeating again and again, so you will unintentionally achieve significantly less. You will again and again be distracted by new e-mails.

The biggest enemy of your own productivity is the huge amount of e-mails which are coming in every day. Handling the electronic mail takes a lot of time and stresses you, as you are hardly ever getting by. You have just answered five e-mails, but during that time three new messages have already arrived. But what helps? The Yesterbox! The concept is very simple, very effective and has been invented by Toni Hsieh, CEO at Zappos. You answer all e-mails that came in yesterday. Not more. You will only be allowed to read e-mails that came in today when you have worked off the first e-mails of yesterday. This simple method has the great advantage that it comes to an end every day. You will reach your goal to work off all e-mails, every day. At least, yesterday’s messages will be answered at some point. A simple though truly effective strategy.

5. Take Heed Of Parkinson’s Law

The British sociologist C. Northcote Parkinson spread Parkinson’s Law in the mid-1950s which says: The work in progress takes exactly as long as we allow it to take. Confusing? Let’s take a look at the following example: a graphic designer has to create a logo for a client. If he allows for the whole day to do it, he will have completed the task roughly within one day. If he allows for three hours only, the logo will most likely be completed after three hours. And the result will not be of a poorer quality as if he had worked on it the whole day. It is possible to control the degree of your productivity and thereby become particularly effective. Set realistic time limits to complete single tasks. In addition, you can use Time & Bill to record the time you needed for particular projects.

6. Create A Pleasant Working Atmosphere

This point is controversial, as there are two different views. There are people who appreciate the chaos at their workplace, because it supposedly inspires their creativity. On the other hand, there are people who regard a tidy desk as prerequisite for any kind of creativity and productivity. Try both ways.

Work on a neat, tidy desk on one day and on the other, do not set great store by putting everything where it belongs. Find out which environment is best for your work and which impedes your productivity. It is important that you create a pleasant working atmosphere. Your individual preferences decide what this atmosphere looks like.

7. Meditieren helps

Concentration and productivity are closely related. A good power of concentration often triggers an increase in productivity. To get out more of your day and become more productive, you should also work on your concentration. Numerous studies proved that meditation has exactly this effect. Already a few minutes per day will clearly improve your concentration and thereby have a positive effect on your productivity.

8. Learn To Say “No”!

It may sound banal, but for many people it is incredibly difficult to say no! If you want to please everybody and are always afraid to miss on something, your productivity will doubtless suffer from it. If you have planned to write your homework this afternoon for instance, please continue doing it. This also means that you say „no“ when your friend asks you if you have time this afternoon. Focus on the tasks which are on your to-do list and make sure that you complete them. Even though this sometimes requires a „no“.

9. Power Napping As A Booster For Your Productivity

The safest method to increase your productivity and to get out more of your day is power napping. A short midday nap works wonders. Not without good reason, companies offer sleeping areas for their employees. They know that a short nap significantly increases the performance of each employee. Studies proved that power napping for 30 minutes has a positive effect on productivity.

10. Look At Photographs Of Animal Babies

Yes, you read right. Photographs of animal babies have a positive effect on your productivity. The study of Hiroshima University in Japan (Ref: Hiroshima Universität) is responsible for this perception. It revealed that looking at animal babies triggered emotions among participants. These, in turn, have positive effects on their performance. The participants subsequently enhanced their concentration and showed a better accuracy.
